Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says the Australian parliament will be presented with “world-leading” legislation next week. Age restrictions have already been approved by all state and territory leaders.
Speaking to parents across the nation, Prime Minister Albanese reassured families, saying “We understand your concerns about online safety. This government is here to support you and your children.”
The new rules will be strict and clear:

- Companies have 12 months to implement these changes
Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram, has raised concerns about the practical side of these rules. Their regional policy director, Mia Garlick, suggests that app stores like Apple and Google should handle age restrictions instead of individual social media platforms. She explains that having different age controls for each app could be confusing for families and young users.
Meta argues that current technology isn’t perfect for age verification. They believe it would be simpler if app stores managed these restrictions, rather than requiring each social media platform to create their own system.
The law will come into effect after a one-year transition period, giving social media companies time to adapt their platforms and implement proper age verification systems.
