Apple Buys Pixelmator Photo Editing App

The acquisition of Pixelmator by Apple was announced on Friday. As of now, Pixelmator Pro, Pixelmator for iOS, and Photomator apps will not undergo any material changes under the new corporate umbrella, according to the company. Pixelmator has been around since 2007 making picture editing software. It was started in the capital city of Lithuania called Vilnius.

Pixelmator said in their announcement that they are excited to reach more people all around the world now that they are part of Apple. They also said it is amazing what a small group of people can do all the way from Lithuania. Apple wants to make picture editing even better by combining it with artificial intelligence. Apple wants Pixelmator features to be directly in the Photos app for easy use.

Right now Pixelmator apps work on iOS, macOS, iPadOS and visionOS devices but not Android phones and tablets. It is unlikely this will change under Apple ownership. In the past when Apple buys companies, it usually integrates their technology more over time.

Apple did not say more about the deal. It is still waiting for approval from regulators. Apple has been adding artificial intelligence features to the camera and photo apps on iPhones and iPads. Recently it added an eraser tool to automatically remove objects from photos, similar to Google’s Magic Eraser.

This acquisition means Pixelmator editing tools may soon be built directly into Apple devices for easier photo touch-ups on the go. Pixelmator users can continue enjoying full features for now while Apple potentially plans an integrated future.
