YouTube is changing the types of videos it shows to teens. In a recent post, YouTube said it won’t suggest videos as much that show people being mean without hurting each other or that only talk about looking perfect.
Some videos by themselves aren’t bad. But if teens watch lots of them one after the other, it could make them feel bad about themselves. Teens might start to think there is only one right way to look. YouTube wants to stop this so teens feel good and comfortable as they grow up.
The new rules apply worldwide. YouTube will suggest fewer videos about:
- Comparing body parts like how thin someone is
- Saying being very fit and muscular is the best
- Tutorials about changing how noses or eyes look
- People intimidate others or fake fighting without touching
YouTube talked to experts about young people. Experts say that constantly watching videos saying there is only one perfect body type can mess with how teens see themselves. Limiting these videos should help teens feel better about who they are.
Allison from YouTube’s advisory committee said If kids watch too many videos like this, they might start thinking they need to change to look perfect too. The new rules can help teens feel good about themselves as they grow up and meet new people.
