WhatsApp has added social capabilities to its status feature. You can now add private mentions to your status in the messaging app, just like you can tag someone in Instagram Stories.
With the new “Private Mentions” option, tagging a friend in your Status will send them a private notification instead of publicly displaying the tag. Tagged contacts can then choose to reshare the update if they want.
WhatsApp is also introducing likes for Statuses. Simply tap the green heart under a contact’s update to privately approve of their post without others knowing how many likes it received.
Both these new features aim to make Status sharing more interactive while keeping things private between users. Expect rolling updates worldwide soon.
As WhatsApp enhances the social experience, status is becoming more akin to Instagram Stories. Will more visual tweaks arrive in future too? Only time will tell how the once messaging-only app adapts!
