If you have important extensions installed on your Chrome browser, you should check them. Some very popular ones might stop working soon because of the changes that Google is making.
One extension that many people use is called uBlock Origin. It helps block annoying ads on websites. Recently, people using uBlock Origin saw a warning that it may not work in the future.
The reason has to do with something called Manifest V3. The Manifest is like a rule book that says how extensions connect to your browser. Google is changing the rule book from Version 2 to Version 3. But uBlock Origin only works with the older Version 2 rules.
When the rule book update is done, extensions like uBlock Origin that don’t follow the new Version 3 rules will stop working. The creators of uBlock Origin made a new version called uBlock Origin Lite that does follow the Version 3 rules. So that one should keep working after the change.
For any other extensions you have that might be at risk, you’ll need to find updated versions that work with the new Manifest Version 3 rules. If the extension page in the Chrome Store doesn’t show a warning, then it’s probably already updated.
Google says 85% of actively developed extensions have already been updated for the new rules. But if you really need the original uBlock Origin, you can still use it with other browsers like Firefox that aren’t making these changes.
Be sure to check your extensions soon so you don’t lose any important ones when Google finishes the big Chrome update! Let me know if any other questions come up.
