Snapchat announced on Tuesday that it will add ads to the app’s main Chat tab. As of now, Snapchat users won’t see any ads in the Chat tab. Instead, they’ll see “Sponsored Snaps” from advertisers.
These Sponsored Snaps will sit alongside normal chats with friends. Users can tell them apart from regular messages. Snapchat also says unopened Sponsored Snaps will disappear over time. People can reply to or click the ad for more info.
Disney serves as Snapchat’s launch partner for Sponsored Snaps. The app also rolled out “Promoted Places” on Snap Map for brands to promote all locations. Early partners include McDonald’s and Taco Bell.
CEO Evan Spiegel told employees last month about plans for Sponsored Snaps and Promoted Places. This aims to boost profits as ad growth lags competitors. While Snapchat adds users, money making struggles – explaining the push for Chat ads.
Chat is hugely popular on Snapchat. Monetizing the previously ad-free space reflects pressure to boost slowing ad sales. All eyes are on if the new placements can successfully drive more cash without annoying fans.
