Earlier this year, Samsung confirmed that Google Messages would replace Samsung Messages on some smartphones. At the time, the company noted that the change only affected new devices. It appears, however, that older phones will also see a similar update.
People online with Galaxy S20 Ultra, S21 Ultra and S22 Plus phones say they’re now getting notices to ditch Samsung Messages for Google Messages as the default. While users can still pick Samsung Messages if preferred, it’s clear Samsung wants more on Google Messages.
This comes after Samsung made Google Messages the pre-loaded app on new foldable and flip phones instead of Samsung Messages. However, the older messaging app could still be downloaded.
The switch gives messaging an upgrade, as Google Messages supports “Enhanced Messaging” over any network while Samsung Messages only supports this improved texting when your carrier allows it.
