A handy new feature is coming to WhatsApp soon. Voice message transcriptions are now available to all users after initially being available only to beta users.
With this new feature, you can read the text version of any voice message you receive on WhatsApp. This is really useful if you can’t listen to the audio right away or if you’re in a noisy environment.
The transcription is generated on your device, so no one else can see or hear the contents of your private messages. WhatsApp says this feature is end-to-end encrypted to keep your conversations secure.
To use the voice message transcription, you’ll need to turn it on in your WhatsApp settings. Go to Settings > Chats and toggle on the “Voice Message Transcripts” option. Then you can choose the language you want the text to appear in.
Right now, Android users can select from English, Portuguese, Spanish, or Russian. iPhone users have access to even more language options.
WhatsApp plans to add support for more languages in the future. The feature is rolling out globally over the next few weeks, so keep an eye out for it to arrive on your device.
To transcribe a voice message, simply long press on it and tap “transcribe.” The text will then appear right below the audio.
