Raspberry Pi and Sony have made a new AI Camera that comes out today for $70. Raspberry Pi says this camera will let people easily build projects that look at and understand photos and videos.
The camera works with all Raspberry Pi computers. It doesn’t need any other expensive parts like special chips or graphics cards. Those things are usually required for cameras to handle lots of image data.
Inside the camera is Sony’s IMX500 sensor. This sensor helps the camera understand images using AI. The Raspberry Pi RP2040 chip also helps with AI. Together they let the camera do AI processing without other extras.
The camera can take 12.3-megapixel photos at 10 frames per second or 40 frames at a lower resolution. It has an adjustable zoom so you can make the picture bigger or smaller. The field of view is 76 degrees, like most phone cameras. The camera is about an inch wide and tall and almost an inch thick.
This new AI Camera is very similar in size to Raspberry Pi’s last regular camera from 2021. However, the AI Camera lets you easily add smarts like image recognition to your projects without much programming knowledge or expensive gear.
Raspberry Pi’s CEO said computer vision tools are getting more popular worldwide. He hopes people will have fun building new devices and programs using the new camera’s AI abilities. At $70, the AI Camera is very affordable for schools, hobbyists, and developers to experiment with computer vision and artificial intelligence.
