Mozilla Cuts Jobs and Closes Key Divisions Fighting for Internet Freedom

Mozilla Foundation layoffs 30 percent of its workforce, and its advocacy and global programs divisions are closed, according to TechCrunch.

While most people know Mozilla for its Firefox browser, the Foundation had a bigger role – protecting internet freedom. Now, with these divisions gone, their ability to fight for a better internet might be reduced.

Brandon Borrman, Mozilla’s communications head, told The Verge that the company isn’t giving up on its mission. “Fighting for a free and open internet remains central to what we do. We’re just changing how we do it,” he explained.

This isn’t Mozilla’s first job cut in 2024. Earlier in February, Mozilla Corporation let go of about 60 workers. They also scaled back their Mastodon project and shut down their 3D platform to focus on Firefox and AI work.

In a company-wide email on October 30th, Executive Director Nabhia Syed explained the tough decision. She wrote that they need to stay focused during challenging times, even if it means ending some successful programs to reach new goals.

The Foundation had roughly 120 employees before these latest cuts. While the exact number of affected workers wasn’t shared, the 30% reduction suggests about 36 people lost their jobs.
