In November last year, Meta began developing a mixed-reality headset inspired by the Apple Vision Pro. A launch date of 2027 was planned for the device, internally referred to as La Jolla. However, a recent report suggests it may not see the light of day.
Meta wanted their new headset to have really nice screens like the Vision Pro. But those screens cost too much money. Meta’s bosses had a meeting to talk about the headset. They decided it was too expensive to sell for $1,000 like they planned. The Vision Pro costs $3,500 and not many people bought it. So Meta stopped work on their high-end headset.
Now Meta is focusing more on cheaper VR and AR headsets instead of expensive new ones. They will keep working on updates to the Quest headset and might show new AR glasses soon. Meta is also considering letting other companies use their virtual reality software, Horizon OS. This could help other brands make VR headsets too.
While the expensive La Jolla headset got canceled, Meta isn’t giving up on VR and AR. They will keep working on more affordable options for everyone to enjoy virtual and mixed-reality experiences. It seems high prices remain a challenge, but competition may heat up as the technology becomes more mainstream.
