Introducing Canva Docs

Graphic design platform Canva launched its new collaborative word-processing tool, Docs, at its inaugural Canva Create event this week. Aiming to appeal to white-collar stalwarts like Google Docs in style, Canva Docs is the latest addition to the company’s suite of design tools that have been repackaged as a Visual Worksuite.

Canva Docs will allow multiple users to collaborate on the same document at the same time, and it also features spell checking and supports languages other than English, including those in non-Latin languages figure.

Canva Docs’ most notable feature has to do with the company’s emphasis on visual design, which is obviously what they are mostly known for.

The new word processor will offer a range of formatting templates to choose from, and the Docs to Decks feature will automatically reformat documents into presentations which you can edit afterwards.

Users will be able to embed other Canva projects into their documents, such as demo videos and digital whiteboards. Canva launched its new whiteboard tool last month, a Miro competitor that enables users to collaborate remotely on unlimited workspaces. These items can be dropped directly into Canva documents, or opened and edited directly in Docs.

While Canva Docs was the biggest announcement at the Canva Create event, the company also introduced several new features to its current product suite. This includes adding Canva’s background removal tool to its video editor for remote control of presentations and Templates integrated with Flourish, the data visualization platform acquired by Canva earlier this year.

Canva’s diverse suite of products — including its marketplaces for website creators and developers — can’t come fast enough, with rival Adobe this week announcing a $20 billion acquisition of online collaborative design tool Figma.

Unfortunately, Canva Docs is not yet available and is expected to be released later this year. However, to be among the first to get this app, all you need to do is to join the waitlist and I strongly believe that pro users will be given priority.
