On Tuesday, Google announced that it would release Android 15 and its source code to the public ahead of the coming consumer launch, bringing the new mobile OS to Pixel devices in the coming weeks. In the coming months, Android 15 will be available on select devices from Samsung, Honor, iQOO, Lenovo, Motorola, Nothing, OnePlus, Oppo, Realme, Sharp, Sony, Tecno, Vivo, and Xiaomi.
Android 15 comes with some cool new features. One is called “Private Space”, which lets you keep personal info separate from the rest of your phone. There are also improvements to split-screen mode – you can save your favorite app combinations to quickly open them side by side. The taskbar at the bottom of the screen can now stay on all the time too.
Partial screen recording is another new addition. This lets you choose to only capture part of your screen while recording videos, which is helpful for privacy. Signing into apps and websites will also be easier with passkeys – you can sign in with a single tap for secure logins.
Google is making the source code for Android 15 available to developers. This lets other companies customize Android for their devices. Developers can also find out how to update their apps to work properly with Android 15. Google aims to help developers improve their apps and make them work well on any version of Android.
Most changes in Android 15 are optional for developers. This gives them more time to update their apps before having to fully support the new version. Google wants to make sure apps continue working smoothly after each Android update.
