Right now, the Google Search widget on Android lets you customize it in some fun ways. You can pick different logos for Google and tweak the search bar by changing its shape and see-throughness. There are also slider bars to precisely pick the perfect hue and saturation for its color.
But one thing it can’t do yet is dynamically change colors to match your phone’s theme. This means the widget’s colors won’t adjust if you switch to a light or dark mode. Google might fix that soon with an upcoming upgrade though.
Testers have found signs of a redesigned widget in the latest beta version of the Google app. It looks like Google will replace the sliders for picking colors with a “Device color theme” setting instead. This should automatically style the widget to go along with your wallpaper and current light or dark mode.
The screenshots show the updated customization menu keeping the system theme options we have now, plus light and dark defaults, along with a transparency slider. However, it seems like Google may remove the logo and bar shape pickers. The redesigned widget would always use a blue “G” icon and a pill-shaped search box by default.
Since this is still in beta testing, Google could potentially add those customization choices before releasing them to everyone. We’ll have to wait and see what the final version looks like when it’s ready to roll out widely.
With Dynamic Color support, the search widget would blend in better on different devices and themes. While losing some personalization, this update aims to improve it adapting to your device’s look and feel. Only time will tell if users prefer the automatic styles or miss tweaking small details themselves.
