Google Testing “Gemini Button” on Android Lock Screen

Out of fear of losing out on the hype train, Google is investing heavily in generative AI. Using its Gemini assistant and large language model, it has been able to get Gemini in front of a ton of users really fast thanks to its control over Android. In an effort to bring Gemini to more users, Google is currently testing an Android lock screen button dedicated to Gemini.

Right now, there are a few ways to start Gemini like pressing the power or home button. But Google may add a fourth way – a big round “Gemini button” below the fingerprint scanner on lock screens. In the latest Android 15 test version, this button’s code is hidden but doesn’t do anything yet.

The button has a sparkle icon which reminds of AI. So it’s likely for Gemini even if disabled now. Google may add new AI features in the next Android 16 update out next year. Having the button makes these easier to access from lock screens. However, an extra button also crowds screens.

Only time will tell if the Gemini button officially arrives. It could let super fast unlock access to AI via fingerprints. Or maybe Google just wants to experiment before Android 16 lands. Either way, spots like this peek behind tech firm curtains at what could change on phones later. Stay tuned for if the button gets finished or fades from Android futures.
