Google Messages Adds Backup Option – Here’s how It Works

Google One already allows you to back up your text messages, but Google Messages does not. As it turns out, Google is working on a backup and restore solution for the app.

The new backup and restore feature for Google Messages will let you save your chat history, photos, videos, and more. This should be more convenient than using the current Google One option, as you’ll be able to manage your backups directly within the Messages app.

When the feature rolls out, you’ll see a prompt to activate the backup. You can also access it through the app’s settings under “backup & sync.” The backup uses end-to-end encryption, but you’ll need to have a screen lock enabled on your device.

Once you set up the backup, your conversations will be automatically restored when you sign in to Messages on a new device. You can also choose to delete and start a new backup or use Messages without backing up at all if your backup can’t be restored.

Additionally, the backup will let you toggle a setting to only sync photos and videos over Wi-Fi, helping you save mobile data.

There’s no timeline yet on when this backup and restore feature will launch, but it’s a welcome addition that will make it easier to switch devices and keep your messaging history safe. Google Messages is also getting other handy features like the ability to choose photo quality before sending and sensitive content warnings.
