Google is adding a cool new feature to their Meet video chatting app on Android phones. Right now you can only make your background look nice with AI on the website version of Meet. But work is happening to bring that to Android too!
Researchers found clues that Google is developing the ability to change backgrounds with AI directly in the Meet app. Inside one version of the Gmail app code, they saw an option to “Make a Background” during video calls. This matches what the website can already do.
It’s still early though – tapping that option doesn’t do anything yet. Google needs more time to perfect it. But, they aim to let Android users generate background images by describing what they want, like “beach” or “space.” Different styles may also be options, like photos or fantasy scenes.
Getting AI backgrounds on Meet has been available on the website through a Google Workspace experiment. Soon Android users will join in on the fun. You need the Gemini feature from Google Workspace or an AI Premium subscription with Google One to use it.
Meet has added other neat AI features recently too. Like automatically taking notes during calls. And it’s confirmed Android is getting that perk soon as well. Back in April Google outlined more AI improvements planned for Meet.
