Google Gemini Gets a New Female Voice

How important is the sound quality of your phone to you? We don’t mean the audio quality from its speakers (although that can be pretty important), but “who” you’re talking to when you talk to your phone’s virtual assistant. With two new voice profiles introduced just last year, Google Assistant offers a dozen voice profiles to choose from. With Google’s new Gemini AI, you’ve only been able to talk to one voice. The situation is finally changing now.

Gemini’s single voice has always been male. But now, Gemini has a new female voice option. Researchers first noticed Google working on multiple voice profiles for Gemini in app settings last month. This suggested users could pick between at least two voices.

Sure enough, reviewers now hear the female voice when using Gemini. However, there’s still no way to switch between male and female. Google may be testing the female voice out first before a full rollout.

Having more voice choices could make Gemini more appealing. Onboarding focuses on what you give up from the Assistant. But being able to pick your favorite voice tone may help users warm up to Gemini. While one extra voice isn’t a huge change, a few options and easy switching between them would enhance the experience.

Google is taking an important step by adding a second voice profile to Gemini. But the feature isn’t fully baked yet. With some fine-tuning, voice selection could encourage more people to interact with the AI.
