Google Chat Gets Voice Message Transcriptions

In an effort to further enhance Google Chat, Google is introducing a new feature that allows voice messages to be transcribed. Following the introduction of voice messages earlier this year, this update continues the evolution of the app, which succeeded Google Hangouts.

Dubbed “Chat Transcription”, the new feature automatically types out recorded voice clips sent in chats. Users can view or hide the written words. Transcripts also aid screen readers, boosting accessibility.

The speaking-to-texting tool arrives today across Google Chat on Android, iOS and websites. It rolled out to Workspace and personal customers but may take up to two weeks to hit everyone.

Voice messages and texts both tuck under existing compliance rules too. So monitoring tools properly handle and archive both formats.

By default, all domains enjoy transcription. Yet administrators can disable it for specific units via general attachment blocking too.

Overall, Chat Transcription bridges the gap between text and talk. With a click, readers obtain the full context of spoken clips in a tidy written format. The update strengthens communication on Google Chat further.
