With Ray-Ban Meta glasses taking off in recent months, smart glasses are experiencing a renaissance of sorts. With its own Gemini-powered glasses, Google is taking on Ray-Ban. Reports say Google talked to Ray-Ban maker EssilorLuxottica about adding Gemini to future smart glasses.
Ray-Ban Meta glasses have been a big success since launching. Now Google wants a piece of the action. Google’s artificial assistant Gemini could power the next Ray-Ban glasses instead of Meta’s AI.
EssilorLuxottica currently works with Meta on Ray-Ban smart sunglasses. But Google met with them to discuss Gemini glasses. It’s very unlikely EssilorLuxottica will drop Meta, though. Meta may even buy part of EssilorLuxottica soon.
Google is building an extended reality (XR) platform for headsets and glasses too. They’re working with Samsung and Qualcomm on a developer version for later this year. A consumer version may come in early 2025. So any Google Gemini glasses are still a ways off.
Ray-Ban Meta glasses cost $299. They let you take photos and videos, listen to music, and get help from Meta’s AI assistant. Meta recently updated them to record longer videos and work with more apps too.
While a Google partnership would be big, don’t expect to swap your Ray-Ban Meta glasses for Gemini ones anytime soon. Meta and EssilorLuxottica have a strong relationship. But this shows Google is serious about competing in the smart glasses space.
