In February, Disney and Epic Games announced that they were collaborating on a “persistent world” featuring characters from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and more. Fortnite has featured Disney franchises for years, but this new world promises to be something even bigger.
Now we’re learning more about what this shared universe will look like. Epic Games’ Saxs Persson said players will be able to jump between worlds easily. You’ll be able to enter through Fortnite or directly through Disney World. But no matter how you get in, your characters and friends will be the same in both places. It will feel like it’s all one big connected world.
This is a smart move for both companies. Many Fortnite players already collected lots of Marvel and Star Wars outfits. If Disney made their own separate world, players might not want to leave what they built in Fortnite. Epic also takes really good care of Disney Worlds in Fortnite already. And Disney invested $1.5 billion in Epic! So if Epic does well, Disney does well too.
You won’t necessarily be able to run around as Mickey Mouse with a gun in Fortnite though. Persson said different characters will have different rules. For example, Lego mini figures can’t hold guns because that doesn’t fit with Lego. Brands will get to choose what’s okay for their characters.
We don’t know when we’ll get to experience this new connected world just yet. But Persson is really excited to create “what every Disney fan has ever wanted.” With Epic and Disney working together, this shared universe could be incredibly fun and magical!
