ChatGPT’s Advanced Voice Mode feature is now available on the web, so users can interact with the AI chatbot from their browsers. It was announced on X by the company’s chief product officer, Kevin Weil.
This new feature is only available to paying customers, including Plus, Enterprise, Teams, and Edu subscribers. OpenAI plans to make it available to free users in the coming weeks.
The web version follows Voice Mode’s successful launch on ChatGPT’s iOS and Android mobile apps in September. The feature uses GPT-4’s audio technology to create natural, real-time conversations. What’s cool is that ChatGPT can pick up on how fast you’re talking and even respond with emotional tones.
Starting a voice chat is simple:
- Click the Voice icon in the bottom-right corner of ChatGPT’s window
- Allow your browser to use your computer’s microphone
- You’ll see a blue orb appear in the center of your screen
Users can choose from nine different voices for ChatGPT, each with its own personality. For example, you can pick “Arbor” for a laid-back conversation or “Ember” if you want a more upbeat chat partner.
There are some limits to keep in mind. Plus and Team subscribers have a daily time limit for using Voice Mode. OpenAI will let you know when you have 15 minutes left for the day. When the feature becomes available to free users, they’ll get a monthly preview to try it out.
