RCS support is one of the biggest additions to iOS 18, offering a more modern messaging experience between Android phones and iPhones. It turns out, there’s one group chat quirk you need to know about.
While Android’s Google Messages lets you rename group chats for your eyes only, things have changed now that iOS users can use RCS. If an Android user renames a shared group, the new name will apply to everyone in the chat – including iPhone friends!
This is different than before, when only the Android user saw the new title. It’s also unlike WhatsApp, which gives options for who can change group names.
It’s important to remember that iOS has always let any user rename a group if others also had iPhones. So RCS just extends this across platforms. Now you have to be cautious of renaming shared groups that contain iPhone owners.
If you need to identify a chat, consider assigning nicknames to contacts privately instead of renaming the whole conversation. Avoid any embarrassing situations now that iOS users fully participate in RCS group texts.
