Earlier this week, Apple released macOS 15, also known as Sequoia, their newest computer operating system update. A few security tools from CrowdStrike, SentinelOne, Microsoft, and others stopped working properly because of the software update, according to posts on social media and messages on a Slack channel for Mac users.
It’s not totally clear what the exact issues are, but it seems like the update is affecting several products made by companies that provide security software for Mac computers and businesses. This has frustrated people who work on protecting Macs or use security tools for Macs.
Patrick Wardle, who created the Mac and iOS security company DoubleYou, said it’s annoying for security tool developers when Apple’s updates cause problems that users then blame on the security tools. He said Apple should test their updates more before releasing them so these types of issues don’t happen.
Right after the macOS Sequoia release, an employee from CrowdStrike said in the Mac admins Slack room that they had to delay supporting the new Mac operating system version. The employee also said CrowdStrike sent a “Tech Alert” to customers about network connection problems in the update.
Some Reddit users also posted about facing issues with CrowdStrike’s security program on the new macOS. SentinelOne and ESET warned customers not to upgrade until their security programs supported the new operating system version, due to problems. People in the Slack channel reported Microsoft Defender for Mac running into issues too after the Sequoia update.
A few security researchers said the new update caused problems with their firewalls and browsing the web on their Macs. It seems the update may have briefly blocked some people’s internet access until fixes were made. Some Reddit posts mentioned issues with the Firefox browser as well after upgrading to macOS Sequoia.
Overall it looks like Apple’s latest macOS update unfortunately broke or limited the functionality of several popular security programs until the developers could issue updates to fix problems specifically tied to macOS 15. Many hope Apple will do more testing on future updates to avoid affecting important security software people rely on for protecting their Mac computers and networks.
