Early this year, we heard that Apple is considering developing augmented reality smart glasses, but these may not be available until 2027 at the earliest. Apparently, as reported by a trusted source, the company is considering less ambitious smart glasses. Now Mark Gurman, a trusted Apple reporter, says Apple may make smart glasses similar to Meta’s Ray-Ban glasses.
Meta’s Ray-Ban glasses are very popular right now. They let you take pictures, listen to music, and take calls without needing your phone. But they don’t have any special screens in the lenses or features that track where you look, like augmented reality glasses would.
Apple’s glasses might be like Meta’s Ray-Ban glasses and not have augmented reality. That would make them cheaper and easier to build. They probably wouldn’t be as big or heavy as AR glasses either. And the battery would last longer.
If Apple’s glasses are non-AR, they could come out sooner than if they had augmented reality. AR glasses would be more complicated and expensive to make. Non-AR glasses would also sell for a lower price than AR glasses likely would.
Other companies see the success of Meta’s Ray-Ban glasses too. Samsung may soon release its own smart glasses that work with Google software. If Apple joins with non-AR glasses, more companies will probably make similar glasses too.
Smart glasses are an exciting new technology. By making simpler non-AR glasses first, Apple could get their version to customers sooner at an affordable price. Only time will tell if they decide to challenge Meta in the smart glasses market like this.
