With RCS chats, users will now be able to share pictures and videos in their original quality. This feature was discovered back in August during an APK teardown by Android Authority.
The new “Original quality” media sharing option is now available in the beta version of the Google Messages app, indicating a wider rollout is coming soon. This means you’ll no longer have to settle for low-resolution images and videos when chatting with friends and family.
Here’s how it works: When you go to share a photo or video, you’ll see a new “Media Quality” option at the top. You can choose between “Optimized for chats,” which will compress the media, or “Original quality” to send it in full resolution.
The “Original quality” setting is marked with an HD+ icon to make it easy to distinguish. Once you select it, you can add a caption and send off your high-quality media.
It’s important to note that sending original quality files may use more data and take longer to upload compared to the compressed versions. But for those times when you want to share crisp, detailed photos and videos, the new option in Google Messages is a game-changer.
The setting you choose will apply to both the current chat and any future chats. While it would be nice to have separate controls, this simplified approach ensures a consistent media sharing experience.
Get ready for an upgrade to your Google Messages chats – the “Original quality” media feature is on its way!
