Unify Your Health-Tracking with Health Connect’s New Feature

Google Health Connect lets you aggregate your data from multiple fitness and health-tracking apps on Android and keep all your information in one place. By using Health Connect, you can check on your data, manage access to your data, and share data between health and fitness apps. However, apps can only share data that Google designed Health Connect to handle, so some entries, such as those for your yoga and meditation sessions, aren’t yet supported. With Health Connect’s next version, that’s changing.

The upcoming version of Health Connect will introduce a new “Mindfulness” category, allowing apps to save and access your yoga, meditation, breathing, and other mindfulness-related activities. This means you’ll be able to view all your wellness data, from fitness tracking to meditation sessions, in one convenient location.

To enable this, apps will need to request new permissions from users – “android.permission.health.READ_MINDFULNESS” to access mindfulness data, and “android.permission.health.WRITE_MINDFULNESS” to save new mindfulness sessions. The data will be stored in Health Connect’s new “MindfulnessSessionRecord” API.

When adding a mindfulness session, apps can include details like the start and end time, type of activity, title, and any notes. This makes it easy to keep a comprehensive record of your wellness routines.

The new mindfulness support is debuting in Android 16 Developer Preview 1, but will also be coming to older Android 14 devices through a Google Play system update. As Health Connect continues to expand its capabilities, it becomes an increasingly useful tool for consolidating your health and fitness data in one centralized location.
