Moving Passkeys Between Devices About To Get a Lot Easier

With all relevant operating systems now supporting passkeys, companies are increasingly using them instead of passwords. Since users don’t have access to cryptographic keys, intercepting them is much more difficult, so passkeys minimize the risk of getting hacked. There is currently no easy way to import or export passkeys, so those switching between service providers may prefer traditional passwords. In order to reduce friction between distinct platforms, FIDO Alliance is working on a solution for moving passkeys between them.

Right now, there’s no simple way to move passkeys between services like Apple and Android. You’d need to recreate each passkey manually on a new device. But FIDO Alliance is developing standards to let passkeys transfer securely.

Their new system will allow passkeys to export and import without ever revealing the keys. This removes a barrier stopping many from fully adopting passkeys.

For now, a cross-platform password manager can at least let you access passkeys everywhere. But future updates aligned with FIDO’s standards aim to dissolve platform lock-ins around passkeys for good.

Soon switching devices won’t mean losing all your passkeys. This upgrade moves passkeys one step closer to replacing passwords across all our devices.
