Casio’s Cuddly New Robot Pet Moflin Now Available for Preorder

You may have heard about Casio’s new robot pet called Moflin. Moflin is a small fluffy robot that resembles a cross between a hamster and the cute fuzzy balls from Star Trek called Tribbles. Unlike Sony’s robot dog Aibo, Moflin is meant to sit in your hands and be cuddled.

Moflin works a little differently than other robot pets. Instead of responding to commands, Moflin learns about you over time. As you hold and play with Moflin, it will start to make unique sounds and movements that show it recognizes you. Moflin uses sensors to remember how you interact with it so it gets to know you better.

Casio says Moflin is very soft and huggable. Its fluffy fur makes it comfortable to hold. Under the fur, Moflin has sensors that let it feel your touch. It can tell when you are petting or squeezing it gently. Moflin also has movable ears and a tail that helps show its mood.

You control Moflin using a simple touchscreen app on your phone or tablet. The app connects to Moflin through Bluetooth so you can play games and teach it new behaviors. You earn points as Moflin learns that which can be used to unlock new interactions. Casio wants playing with Moflin to be a fun experience for kids and adults alike.

Preorders are open now on Casio’s website for $99. Moflin is expected to start shipping in January. For under $100, Moflin could make a cute low-maintenance option for someone wanting a robot companion. Its cuddly design and ability to form bonds over time set it apart from robotic toys like Sony’s dog Aibo.
