Due to the large screen size of Android tablets, it is often possible to view multiple apps comfortably on the screen, which is why the Android taskbar was introduced a few years back. By adding recent apps to the taskbar on Android tablets, Google plans to make multitasking even faster.
The Android taskbar lets you quickly launch apps pinned to the bottom of the screen. Now, Google wants to show the last two apps you used there too. The code for this was found in the latest Android 15 test version. Currently, taskbars show pinned apps and suggested apps based on your routines. But the suggested apps may not be what you used recently.
Showing the last two apps directly answers that. You’ll know at a glance what you tapped on last, without opening other screens. Several other companies like OnePlus and Samsung already do this. With Google adding it to the core Android code, all tablets will get faster app switching through their taskbars.
The change comes as Android continues optimizing for large devices. Early taskbars stuck to the whole screen. Now they hide by default and pop up only when needed, conserving space on folding tablets. Google also added options to use the older persistent or newer swiping styles. By spotlighting recently used apps next, Google streamlines multitasking on all Android slates.
If enabled, Android 15’s tweak replaces suggested apps with the previous pair used. This peek at forthcoming taskbar upgrades aims to speed up switching between apps on tablets through quicker access in the familiar bottom bar. Fans may see the refinement arrive after further Android 15 testing by Google.
