With Wordy, you can uniquely learn English. The app automatically translates and defines unknown words while watching your favorite movies or TV shows. Over 500,000 titles are available on Wordy, including HBO’s “The Penguin” and Disney+’s “Agatha All Along.”
Wordy was created by Sándor Bogyó, a 23-year-old man from Budapest. He made the app because he had trouble understanding words when watching shows in English, which isn’t his first language. A Chrome extension he used before inspired him to make a better mobile app.
When you start an episode on Wordy, it looks at the subtitles to see the words. The app uses “lemmatizing” which is a way to find the base form of each word. While you watch on your TV or computer, the app listens through your phone’s microphone to know where you are. This helps it follow along and show you any difficult words. If a new word comes up, just check your phone for the meaning.
You can see a summary of each episode with all the words listed by difficulty. There are levels like Beginner, Elementary, Intermediate, Upper-intermediate, Advanced, and Proficiency English. Wordy also lets you save words to study later with flashcards.
The app connects to large movie and subtitles databases to find the right info. It costs $2.99 per month or $29.99 for a whole year. An Android version is coming soon too.
