Testing Begins for Google Photos’ “Ask” Feature

At I/O, Google showed off a new Gemini-powered Google Photos feature called “Ask Photos.” At the time, the company revealed that users could ask Gemini to look up information from their photo library. We now have a better idea of how the feature will work, even though it has not yet been released to users.

Reports say Google is testing Ask Photos with select Pixel users. The interface has changed slightly from Google’s initial demonstration. Rather than its own tab, Ask Photos appears as a button next to the search bar.

Tapping it brings up example questions and a space to type custom ones. When one user tried the sample “Photos of me over time” prompt, an error popped up. Google Photos then defaulted back to classic search.

The feature only lasted briefly for this tester, suggesting it’s still under development. Ask Photos didn’t work properly and was removed quickly.

Google likely wants more user feedback before a wider rollout. We may see more changes before a public beta. For now, Gemini’s photo search abilities in Google Photos remain a work in progress behind the scenes.

Fans will have to wait patiently for Ask Photos to become fully functional. But this brief sighting reveals Google continues progress on integrating its AI with images.
